It was still under warranty and the Genius told me hairline cracks were covered under the warranty and he replaced it free. Maybe give that a try. Best of luck.

As an concerned customer, also my 8 week old iphone 3G (handled like a raw egg) shows also the hairline cracks on the white backcover, in the area of the mute switch.
